TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PLACEMENT PROGRAM
If you'd like to move out before your case closes, check this out! As a junior or senior in high school (16 or older) you may be able to share an apartment with other youth, save some money, and receive support services while you transition to adulthood. Learn about the Transitional Housing Placement Program (THPP).
You know where you're heading in life; well, at least you're pretty sure. But one thing's certain: it's time to get out of the house and be on your own. If you're heading towards transition from foster care the THPP will assist you spread your wings and find your own nest. Learn how to live with a roommate in your own apartment, cook, clean, get an allowance, shop for clothing, grocery shop, go to college, get a job, save money, meet new friends and learn many more life skills!
THPP Services include but are not limited to:
- Placement in a furnished apartment/house with paid utilities (participants are supervised and have a curfew)
- Food, clothing and personal care allowances.
- Individual assistance in helping you adjust to independent living.
- Financial assistance with education (from Youth Development Services) and employment training for job preparation.
- Classes and workshops that take the mystery out of everyday life. Learn about nutrition and food preparation, life skills, health and safety, transportation, recreation, socialization skills, and values development.
- Transition resource services, case planning and on-site visits from your assigned Children's Social Worker.
Who is Eligible?
- Currently in out-of-home placement and willing to follow the rules and regulations of the program.
- You must be 16 through 18 years old and a dependent of the court.
- Youth must be attending high school or working towards a GED or attending vocational/technical training on a full-time basis throughout placement in the THPP.
- You may be over 18 years old but not 19 if you satisfy the requirements of the Welfare and Institutions code, Section 11403.
- Guardianship Assistance Payment Program (KinGap) youth need to be a court dependent, eligible for Aid for Families with Dependent Children/Foster Care (AFDC/FC eligible).
- You must be doing well in school and with your current caregiver
